After being hit with a slew of allegations from multiple women accusing him of sexual misconduct, Democratic Rep. John Conyers had insisted he would not resign from his seat, but the stress of the allegations landed the 88-year-old congressman in the hospital in Detroit last week.

Speaking from his hospital room during a radio interview Tuesday morning, Conyers announced he is retiring effective today. He endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to replace him, to preserve his “legacy.”

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through now. This too shall pass. … My legacy will continue through my children,” Conyers told Mildred Gaddis on her Detroit radio show.

Regarding the allegations of sexual misconduct, Conyers claimed, “They’re not accurate, they’re not true and they’re something … I can’t explain where they came from.”
