Following the ouster of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by President Trump Tuesday morning, another member of the department has now been fired – for a statement he released about Tillerson’s firing that contradicted the White House, the Associated Press has reported.

Steve Goldstein, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, has been notified that he too is out the door, after he released a statement on Tillerson’s firing that said, in part:

The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security…The Secretary did not speak to the President and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling.”

Goldstein’s statement was in direct contradiction to the statement the White House had released to the Washington Post: Trump last Friday asked Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled top diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington.

Goldstein had told reporters that Tillerson only learned of his firing from Trump’s Twitter post.

Reporters have noted on Twitter that, “two sources say White House just recently called Under Secretary Steve Goldstein to tell him he is no longer needed. Goldstein was then called up to Tillerson’s office for a meeting.”

Another reporter noted that Goldstein “was the 4th highest ranking official” at the State Department.

Below was the original statement released by Goldstein:
