REPORT: Bishop denying holy sacrament to lawmakers over support for controversial bill
As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News App offers the following information published by NCRONLINE.ORG:
Springfield, Ill. — Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki issued a decree June 6 stating that Catholic lawmakers in the Illinois Legislature “who promoted or voted for extreme abortion legislation” cannot receive Communion in churches in his diocese.
He specifically named House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, “due to their leadership roles in promoting the evil of abortion by facilitating the passage of Senate Bill 25 this legislative session and House Bill 40 in 2017.”
The article goes on to state the following:
Other Illinois Catholic lawmakers who voted for either of these abortion bills, he said, also are not to “present themselves to receive Holy Communion.”
LifeSite News launched an effort to send the Bishop support for his stance. In an annoucement on their website, they wrote:
After months of other pro-abortion ‘Catholic’ politicians getting ‘slaps on the wrist’ and ‘stern talkings-to’ from other US bishops and Cardinals over their promotion of abortion, Bishop Paprocki is to be highly commended for taking such action.
This petition will send a message of support to the good bishop, showing him that faithful Catholics actually appreciate when their shepherds lead on difficult issues, like abortion.
In his decree, Bishop Paprocki states: “In accord with canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law…Illinois Senate President John Cullerton and Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan, who facilitated the passage of the Act Concerning Abortion of 2017 (House Bill 40) as well as the Reproductive Health Act of 2019 (Senate Bill 25), are not to be admitted to Holy Communion in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois because they have obstinately persisted in promoting the abominable crime and very grave sin of abortion as evidenced by the influence they exerted in their leadership roles and their repeated votes and obdurate public support for abortion rights over an extended period of time.”
As Bishop Paprocki also noted in his declaration: “These persons may be readmitted to Holy Communion only after they have truly repented these grave sins and furthermore have made suitable reparation for damages and scandal, or at least have seriously promised to do so, as determined in my judgment or in the judgment of their diocesan bishop in consultation with me or my successor.”
THANK YOU, BISHOP PAPROCKI for your clear teaching, and leadership of the Catholic faithful!
The petition had 6,138 signatures on Monday night, out of a goal of 7,500.
CNN religion commentator Father Beck weighed in on Paprocki’s decision. See what he said in the video below:
Some Twitter users expressed outrage over Paprocki’s decision. Examples follow:

but i’m sure the pedophiles are still OK 🙄 how have we not revoked the catholic church’s tax exempt status yet? https://t.co/mtujxVJ6Wb

Just curious, are pedophile priests allowed to receive Communion, or those who steal money? Totally against abortion but not sure alienation of this type is the answer.

There was also plenty of support for the decision:
A good bishop. Pray for him and his parish!
