CARLSBAD, Calif. —  Officials were investigating a suspected smuggling operation after a panga boat was found washed ashore in Carlsbad Monday.

Coast Guard and Border Patrol officials were gathering evidence at the scene where at least eight people were believed to be on the run after the boat washed ashore at Tamarack State Beach Monday morning.

The 18-foot boat had five canisters of gasoline aboard and eight life jackets were found nearby.

Border Patrol agents are treating this as a smuggling incident and are searching the area.
