Citing the coronavirus pandemic, several progressive lawmakers are demanding the Department of Homeland Security release illegal aliens from detention and scale back other immigration enforcement measures.

Democratic Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, along with four other Democratic congressmen, delivered a letter Monday to acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, requesting the administration take action to protect the immigrant community and detained illegal aliens from COVID-19.

The article goes on to state the following:

Among their demands: a “moratorium” on all immigration arrests of individuals who pose no public safety risk, a release of as “many immigrants as possible” from detention, and a reconsideration of the Trump administration’s public charge rules.

The letter was signed by Jayapal, along with Democratic Reps. Joaquin Castro  (TX), Veronica Escobar (TX), Chuy Garcia (IL) and Adam Smith (Wash.).

Jayapal tweeted a copy of the letter and declared, “Today, I led @RepPressley, @JoaquinCastrotx @RepChuyGarcia, @RepEscobar & @RepAdamSmith in writing to @DHSGov to call on the Trump Administration to take swift & immediate action to protect immigrants & people in immigration detention facilities from #COVIDー19.”

“People in detention facilities are completely dependent on the federal gov’t for medical care & we must ensure their safety. We also need to ensure immigrants don’t prioritize government-mandated, court-related requirements over the public health recommendations to stay home,” she added.

“During a public health crisis, it’s vital that we protect the most vulnerable & remove barriers to care for all. The Trump Administration must act now,” Jayapal tweeted.

The Daily Caller noted that Rep. Ilhan Omar sent a separate letter to DHS on Friday, signed by another group of Democrats, demanding a total freeze on deportations.
