President Trump announced on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is being replaced by his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker.

As the president tweeted the announcement, Fox News reported that Trump had actually requested Sessions’s resignation earlier in the morning, prior to his press conference.

Sessions has now submitted his letter of resignation, which President Trump has accepted.

Trump tweeted:

We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well….

….We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.

Below is the resignation letter which Sessions submitted to the president.
