Two Westerville, Ohio police officers were shot and killed Saturday morning around noon, in an ambush-type attack, and a suspect is in custody.

Westerville police said one officer died at the scene and another officer died later at hospital.

Joering, a 16-year veteran of the force, was killed at the scene, and Morelli, a 29-year veteran, died in surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center.

Local WBNS-10TV news reported:

According to a press release, a call came into the Westerville 911 center as a hang-up. Responding officers were fired upon during their arrival at the address.

One officer was killed in the shooting and another died shortly after, according to Columbus Police. The suspect is in custody.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the Westerville officers, their friends, families and the Westerville Police Department at this difficult time. We are indebted to the brave men and women who don the blue and the badge day in and day out to keep our communities safe. Sometimes, those officers don’t make it home at the end of a shift. Now is one of those times and we – as a community – must rally behind the families and fellow officers,” State Senator Kevin Bacon said in a press release.
