Sen. John Kennedy condemned his Democratic colleagues for opposing the Republican-led legislation crafted to address the economic effects of the coronavirus.

On Sunday evening, a procedural vote to move forward with coronavirus legislation failed to earn the 60 votes it needed after Democrats voted against the package. They did so again on Monday. In a speech from the floor on Monday, Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, said the discord is leading the public to believe the country is run by a “bunch of idiots.”

The article goes on to state the following:

“Do you know what the American people are thinking right now?” Kennedy asked. “They’re thinking that the brain is an amazing organ. It starts working in a mother’s womb, and it doesn’t stop working until you get elected to Congress.”

“Do you know what the American people are thinking right now, Mr. President? They’re thinking that this country was founded by geniuses. But it’s being run by a bunch of idiots,” he added.

“Do you know what the American people are thinking right now, Mr. President? They’re thinking, why do the members of the United States Senate continue to double down on stupid?”

Clearly fed up, Kennedy said this was not a Republican bill they were trying to pass, but a bipartisan bill. “We spent hours and hours and hours negotiating these provisions with our Democratic friends! This is not a slush fund. This is a bill to help people and businesses in America,” he said, explaining the terms of the bill.

Kennedy also noted that the bill includes provisions to help businesses who have more than 500 employees as well.  “In the America I was raised in, growing your business and becoming as large as possible was something we aspired to!” he said.

“I don’t understand it,” Kennedy declared, referring to the Democrats’ opposition to the stimulus bill. “There comes a time when we have to stop thinking about the next election and start thinking about the next generation!”

“What are we going to leave to our children if we allow this economy to crash?” he asked. “Let’s pass this bill!”

Monday evening, Kennedy doubled down in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

“I think they think they have the Republicans and the president over a barrel. Reality calls and Congress is hanging up,” Kennedy declared.

“I meant what I said on the floor,” Kennedy said, adding, “More charitable Americans are thinking to themselves, ‘There are some good members of Congress but we can’t figure out what they’re good for.’  Less charitable Americans are saying, ‘how did these morons make it through the birth canal?'”

Kennedy listed a number of non-coronavirus-related items which Democrats are demanding be added to the stimulus bill.  WATCH his interview with Carlson below:
