The NBA is under fire from all sides after apologizing to China for a tweet from Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey that showed solidarity with pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.
Morey on Friday tweeted, “Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong,” bringing a sharp rebuke from China, where several businesses and TV networks cut ties with the Rockets and blocked their games from Chinese viewers.
The article goes on to state the following:
The NBA moved to contain the fallout, faced with the prospect of a serious setback to its work in China’s lucrative market. Morey deleted the tweet and expressed his regrets. The NBA also issued a statement Sunday apologizing for the tweet, and both Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and All-Star power forward James Harden distanced themselves from Morey.
The NBA has been criticized by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and others.
“We’re better than this; human rights shouldn’t be for sale & the NBA shouldn’t be assisting Chinese communist censorship,” Cruz tweeted.
“China is trying to use its market power to silence free speech and criticism of its conduct,” Warren wrote. “In response, the NBA chose its pocketbook over its principles—and our values. We should all be speaking out in support of those protesting for their rights.”
More examples of the backlash follow.

So the @NBA will boycott Charlotte, NC over transgender bathrooms, but won’t boycott China over Muslim internment camps?

Daryl Morey did nothing wrong by showing support for the Hong Kong demonstrators. He shouldn’t have apologized. The @NBA and @HoustonRockets are cowards for choosing an autocratic regime’s cash over human rights. A short item from me on this embarrassment. https://t.co/D7BtgfMLQo

NBA players have no problem speaking out on politics & social issues in America.
But they apologize to #China for a pro democracy tweet from an @NBA team executive.
