DMLNews Nightcap Briefing Tues. Aug 30: Biden’s war on MAGA, state’s war on Second Amendment, DeSantis slaps down Hochul

Today is August 30 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room, in my opinion. 1 – Biden to prop up Dems in battleground state with speech warning about democracy ‘under attack’
Fox News reports: The White House says President Biden will head to Philadelphia on Thursday for a speech in which he will argue that America’s democracy remains “under attack” and highlight “who is fighting” to protect the nation’s freedoms.

The speech, in the crucial general election battleground state of Pennsylvania, comes less than 10 weeks ahead of the November midterm elections, when the Democrats hope to hold onto their razor-thin majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The address also comes as Biden has raised his rhetoric in recent days, targeting who he argues are anti-Democratic “MAGA Republicans” who have embraced “semi-fascism.”

The president will speak at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, where the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s Constitution were debated and signed.

“He will speak about how the core values of this nation — our standing in the world, our democracy — are at stake,” a White House official confirmed to Fox News. “He will talk about the progress we have made as a nation to protect our democracy but how our rights and freedoms are still under attack.”

The White House official added that the president “will make clear who is fighting for those rights, fighting for those freedoms and fighting for our democracy.”

MY TAKE: Biden has no record to run on because he’s trashed the country, so now he’s spewing hate toward MAGA folks, and calling it “unity, hope and optimism”? Give me a break!!

2 – New York to restrict gun carrying after Supreme Court ruling
The Associated Press reports: Amid the bright lights and electronic billboards across New York’s Times Square, city authorities are posting new signs proclaiming the bustling crossroads a “Gun Free Zone.”

The sprawling Manhattan tourist attraction is one of scores of “sensitive” places — including parks, churches and theaters — that will be off limits for guns under a sweeping new state law going into effect Thursday. The measure, passed after a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June expanded gun rights, also sets stringent standards for issuing concealed carry permits.

New York is among a half-dozen states that had key provisions of its gun laws invalidated by the high court because of a requirement for applicants to prove they had “proper cause” for a permit. Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday that she and her fellow Democrats in the state Legislature took action the next week because the ruling “destroyed the ability for a governor to be able to protect her citizens from people who carry concealed weapons anywhere they choose.”

Under the law, applicants for a concealed carry permit will have to complete 16 hours of classroom training and two hours of live-fire exercises. Ordinary citizens would be prohibited from bringing guns to schools, churches, subways, theaters and amusement parks — among other places deemed “sensitive” by authorities.

Applicants also will have to provide a list of social media accounts for the past three years as part of a “character and conduct” review.

MY TAKE: You couldn’t PAY me enough to live in that state!

3 – DeSantis rips into ‘ridiculous’ Kathy Hochul over comments on conservative New Yorkers
The New York Post reports: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ripped New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Tuesday for suggesting at a rally earlier this month that Empire State conservatives should take a hike.

“You have the governor of New York saying all Republicans need to get on a bus and leave the state and come to Florida,” DeSantis said at an unrelated press conference.

“Who would say something so ridiculous? To say if you don’t agree with me then you don’t even have a right to be here.”

Hochul raised eyebrows for saying her conservative nemeses — including former President Donald Trump, gubernatorial opponent Lee Zeldin and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro — have no place in her state.

MY TAKE: If every conservative New Yorker took Hochul up on her words and moved out of the state, they would take their tax dollars with them.  I say do it! DeSantis is right!
