Eight Senate Republicans voted Thursday for a resolution that would curb President Trump’s ability to take military action against Iran without congressional approval.
The Senate passed the resolution in a 55-45 vote, sending it to the House, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has said the measure will come up for a vote after lawmakers return from next week’s recess.
The article goes on to state the following:
The resolution requires Trump to remove U.S. troops against hostilities against Iran unless Congress authorizes military action.
The eight Republican senators who voted in favor of the measure are:
- Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
- Sen. Todd Young (Ind.)
- Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.)
- Sen. Jerry Moran (KS)
- Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.)
- Sen. Susan Collins (Maine)
- Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.)
- Sen. Mike Lee (Utah)
President Trump is reportedly expected to veto the measure.
Sen. Jerry Moran released a statement saying, President Trump was justified in his decision to remove Qassem Soleimani from the battlefield, but added, “The prospect of military action against Iran has consequences that ought to be considered by the full Congress on behalf of the people it represents. In supporting the War Powers Resolution, I respect the president’s obligation to defend against imminent threats while making sure any additional action is properly debated and approved by Congress as required by the Constitution.”

Sen. Bill Cassidy released the following statement:
The War Powers resolution protects our constitutional system of checks and balances while allowing presidents to defend our country from attacks.
If this resolution was in effect at the beginning of the year, President Trump would have still been able to carry out strikes against Iran and General Soleimani (which I supported). (2/3)
The founders gave Congress the power to declare war under Article 1 of the Constitution; we should fulfill this responsibility. (3/3)
