Los Angeles County reported the death of a child due to the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, marking the first time a person under the age of 18 has succumbed to COVID-19 in the US.

The number of coronavirus cases in the state of California has skyrocketed to more than 2,200 as cities on the West Coast scramble to enforce lockdowns, manufacture medical supplies, procure hospital beds and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Los Angeles County reported four additional deaths related to the coronavirus, bringing the county total to 11 on Tuesday. Officials confirmed an additional 128 cases, bringing the county’s total to 662.

San Francisco, the first city in the US to go on lockdown, has reported 131 cases and no deaths, but officials have warned residents that a surge is expected in a week or two.

Statewide in California, there are 2,494 confirmed coronavirus cases to date, with 361 new cases and 49 total deaths.
